I'm not a psychiatrist or have any degrees in psychology but there is one thing that I know and that, it is possible to have a long term relationship with a person romanticly, and I will be discussing a few topics of the Subject.
There are three types of relationships of romance and having multiple alters does not immediately ban you from having a loving partner..
The three types of relationships are as follows:
1. Monogamous relationships - this is the most difficult to obtain and keep functioning, the only way to find a monogamous relationship with another person is to fully disclose the fact that you are a multiple , this will save enough time to have your mate fully understand the complications of the illness, and if they choose to stick with you even though you exhibit other personality and they are still willing to stay with you, then you have found someone who has both accepted you as who you are and someone to share your burden with.. There is a rather ugly side of monogamous relationships and that is when alters conflict with one another as to what they find attractive or something prefered, the easiest way to overcome this issue is to sit down with your partner and have the alter explain themselves fully thier likes and dislikes.. usually in this type of relationship it is best for the multiple to have only one person of affection in the home with them to avoid conflict with other alters..
2. Open relationships - This type of relationship is rather freeing but at the same time it can be harmful if you let your alters each have their own relationship, the biggest challenge of this relationship is establishing rules between alters. With open relationships the biggest challenge isn't the alters, each of them are getting what she/he wants physically and emotionally, it's jelousy of one partner getting in another way which will cause trauma to the multiple if they choose to fight over the multiple, causing disruption in the system itself..
3. Beer-goggles - This type of relationship happens at bar's, this type of relationship may be beneficial for a short period but never fully works out in the end, but then again I have been proven wrong....
being a multiple myself there is the most challenging of tasks, namely sex. If you choose not to be abstinent you must ask yourself, or main alter whether or not you wish for them to participate in sexual actions, threw therapy I personally can not speak on his behalf but we have agreed to not participate in his own sex life due to our own preferences and if we feel the need to compensate our urges we have all agreed to talk with his partner before we undertake our own adventures.. this is not common among multiples but it is the easiest way to deal with our own individuality..
